NYC Study Tour

Fashionista, Uncategorized

In my last post I described the trip I was taking to New York City with the UNT Fashion Merchandising program, where we got to visit with multiple different brands within the fashion industry and got a chance to ask them questions about how to make a name for ourselves. The industry leaders were rich in advice about connecting with as many people as possible and doing as many internships as you can in different kinds of positions to make certain you are entering the job that is just right for you.

New York was especially hard to leave behind this time because every time that I go, it really does start to feel more and more like home. To make matters worse I went with a group of friends and got dressed in business attire to meet with fashion leaders, so it felt like we had made our own little life there. (If that makes sense… haha) It truly was an unforgettable week filled with laughter, good food, great friends, budding industry connections, and free gifts. This was the jumpstart that I needed to set my goals high and make it back to NYC with a point to prove. As I am writing this I have my LinkedIn profile up and a multitude of  tabs open in the search for a city internship next summer. Fingers crossed and working hard.

heading to nyc

I am heading to New York City with the UNT Fashion Merchandising program and I am so excited! We get to make our way around the city to meet with an array of different companies within the industry, including the Louis Vuitton North American headquarters. Along with all of our appointments we get to go on a food tour of Greenwich Village and a broadway show. With the trip approaching rapidly(I leave Sunday) I am starting to get seriously anxious. Main reason being that whenever I am fortunate enough to visit the fashion capitol of the world I get overly critical of my outfits, which can make the packing process extra stressful.

As I am finally starting to get over my packing anxiety to actually start trying to put outfits together I literally am taking all of my clothes out of my closet and scattering them on my bed and gazing at them in fear. After glaring at them for all of 5 minutes I proceeded to leave every article of clothing that I own on the bed and escape into chloe’s room to hide from the responsibility. Now I am writing this post as another attempt to avoid the dreadful task. Will I ever finish filling my suitcase? Stay tuned and be on the lookout for a post trip blog(and hopefully a video) of what I decided to wear and where I went.

just some summer inspiration

Fashionista, Life's Pleasures

Summer is just around the corner so as per usual I am looking for outfit inspiration and ideas. I have a lot of fun things happening this summer including heading to NYC for a study tour with the UNT Merchandising program, so of course I need to look my best! I have been on Pinterest for the past few weeks rounding up some of my favorite summer looks. So enjoy!

Beehive Babe

SO… I have been waiting to share this exciting news and now it is finally time to tell you all that I recently became a Beehive babe (brand ambassador) !! What this means is that I get to share with you all the greatness that is Beehive. They are a boutique out of Austin, with now multiple locations, that all serve up some serious style! I have followed them on Instagram(@beehiveboutique) for quite some time now as one of my sources for inspiration and they are constantly keeping it real with daily doses of extreme cuteness. Beehive is such an inspiring and empowering community that I now get to be apart of, and I am so here for spreading the word. Thank you for such an amazing opportunity!

i am so over fast fashion

For the month of April I have decided to opt out of shopping at “fast fashion” stores. I feel like as a fashion major I always need to keep up with the latest trends and be on top of my game, but what good is that doing for the environment or even for myself? If I am constantly looking at what other people are wearing and mimicking outfits they are putting together, I start to close myself off from being creative and going out of my comfort zone to try and pair something together that I haven’t seen anyone do before. I am totally here for getting inspiration and admiring certain style icons, but I don’t want to try and be them completely!

Also not so fun fact: fashion is the second largest pollutant in the world, second to OIL. Oil you guys!!!! This completely blows my mind. I knew that it was a problem but I didn’t know just how big. Overproducing is real and we need to make more people aware of it. Is always staying on trend worth THIS much damage? The answer is most definitely no. I am going to try my best to do my part and shop exclusively at secondhand stores or only buy from companies that are environmentally conscious or contribute to my communities economy for the month of April and hopefully longer.

Stay tuned to see if I can keep my butt out of Zara!

3 Reasons Why I FW Valentine’s Day

Okay so typically people will feel one of two ways on Valentine’s Day- you either love it or absolutely despise it. The “fans” usually have a significant other to celebrate with and the “haters” are so single that seeing the corny festivities that come with the retched day really piss them off. But yet here I am saying there is another way? Hear me out.

Let’s start out with the most obvious of the three reasons… chocolate. As I am writing this I literally have one hand stuffing my mouth with truffles from a heart-shaped box and the other trying to type this post. Anyways, this day completely revolves around any and all types of chocolate, and that in itself is reason enough to celebrate. Whether you buy it for yourself like I did(yep, single as a pringle) or you have a cutie buying it for you, you get to sit around all day with chocolate just an arms length away.

Reason two is you get to wear all the p i n k and r e d that you want and no one can stare at you with a cocked eyebrow and puzzled expression. I may dress in these colors most days of the week and receive that look all the time, but come Tuesday I will be rocking this color combo with some serious pride!! So get excited and THINK PINK. (See the outfits I am considering for the big day below)

Valentine’s Day when stripped down to its core is really all about LOVE and that is something that we all want and probably actually already have. Sure, maybe it isn’t in the form of a partner, but almost all of us have a strong/steady group of friends, parent(s), siblings, etc. who love them… and that is fabulous you guys! Especially during the current times we need to be spreading more love, so smile at someone and hug all of your loved ones super tight!

So I did a Thing…

Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of styling my best-friends photoshoot that she put together. After hearing about the locations and aesthetic of the photographs that would be taken, I got to work on picking out outfits that captured the sporty, but still very stylish vibe. We had such a great time and I hope this is the first of many shoots that I have the opportunity to style. Now enjoy these super fab pictures!

New Orleans

Life's Pleasures

New Orleans is not a place for the faint of heart. Charming and full of fabulous food no doubt, but come nightfall it becomes an interesting and very intense place to say the least. On the first night we decided to tackle the infamous Bourbon Street, because after all we did make the journey to celebrate my dear friend Kerrigan’s 21st birthday. It was a overall a super fun night, but it definitely took a lot out of us. After waking up later than anticipated we opted for a chill day full of exploring, good food and a late night ghost tour. Walking through the streets of the french quarter listening to ghost stories and old legends is a memory I will never forget. Throw in a few beignets from Cafe Du Monde and loads of live jazz and you have yourself quite the enchanting city.

I’ll be back soon,

Who the Hell Am I?

The Battle of the Aesthetics

I am constantly juggling my two aesthetics trying to find a happy balance between the two of them. Am I the only one with this problem? For example, one day I’ll wake up with the desire to listen to The Lumineers, wear Anthropologie and pretty sundresses and become this carefree, easy-going, hippy type. Then the other days I become this tomboy, modern/edgy girl who listens to The 1975 and wears glitter on her eyelids. It is a constant inner battle that rages on inside my split-in-two heart. I have recently been brainstorming ways, yes you read that right…brainstorming, to find a way to blur the line between the two and create my own aesthetic that pushes the boundaries of my comfort zone. Pairing things like my chic pleated polka dot pants with one of my over-sized band t-shirts and sneakers, or my ruffle sleeve Anthropologie sweater with track pants and heels. What I have learned along the way is that stepping out my comfort zone has actually made getting dressed a hell of a lot easier in the morning. It used to be that whenever I would get dressed or piece together outfits I would think to myself, “It’s super cute BUT I would never in a million years be able to pull it off.” and now I’ll throw together something completely wild and just walk out the door without even daring to look back. All I know is this, the more you push yourself to become the person you were meant to be, the more confident you will become, and the world around you will seem a lot less scary.

Journey To BENZIE blooms

For a while now I have felt trapped in a creative rut when it comes to my blog. I knew I need to change up the look and title of my site, as I have grown so much as a person since I first created my blog. When I started this adventure it was my senior year of high school, and I came up with a name that I thought I would love forever – not the case. So, I took the summer to try and find out what direction I wanted to go creatively, and now we’re here.

Here is a look at the journey to BENZIE:
