NYC Study Tour

Fashionista, Uncategorized

In my last post I described the trip I was taking to New York City with the UNT Fashion Merchandising program, where we got to visit with multiple different brands within the fashion industry and got a chance to ask them questions about how to make a name for ourselves. The industry leaders were rich in advice about connecting with as many people as possible and doing as many internships as you can in different kinds of positions to make certain you are entering the job that is just right for you.

New York was especially hard to leave behind this time because every time that I go, it really does start to feel more and more like home. To make matters worse I went with a group of friends and got dressed in business attire to meet with fashion leaders, so it felt like we had made our own little life there. (If that makes sense… haha) It truly was an unforgettable week filled with laughter, good food, great friends, budding industry connections, and free gifts. This was the jumpstart that I needed to set my goals high and make it back to NYC with a point to prove. As I am writing this I have my LinkedIn profile up and a multitude of  tabs open in the search for a city internship next summer. Fingers crossed and working hard.

april is over and I learned some things

Miscellaneous

I few posts ago I wrote about how I was taking a fast fashion hiatus for the month of April, and now that April is over I want to share with you what all this taught me.

First things first, money was saved. Without making constant trips to the mall to visit some of my favorite stores I would stay home or hangout with friends. This left me with more money to spend elsewhere/save for upcoming trips I have planned for this summer which is a win for most.

When I stopped shopping so frequently, I was less influenced to purchase something solely for the fact that is was trendy. Being someone that is pursuing a degree in fashion I am always keeping up with the latest trends which has shifted my style to be more trend focused rather than style focused, but taking this short little break from extreme exposure to it, allowed for me to breath and think about what the clothing actually meant to me…deep I know. What this has done is allow for me to formulate a wish list of items that I think are essential to my desired style not fashion that might be more expensive, but that I can accumulate over a larger span of time.

After taking only a month long break, as soon as I stepped back into a fast fashion retailer I noticed just how saturated and hypnotizing all of it really is. Let me explain. Now that there is such a fast turnaround time for popular trends it is easy for everyone to hop on board because it is so readily available. This makes for a bunch of little trendy robots that all dress the same(I can say this with hopefully little repercussion because I was one not too long ago). We have created a society that is seriously lacking in individuality, which could be potentially damaging to the psyche of a teenager looking to figure out just exactly who they are/want to become.

And last but certainly not least, it felt really great to know that I was helping out the earth. Which could really use all the help it can get right now!!! So reduce, reuse, recycle, and shop sustainable !!

I will continue to shop a majority of my clothing this way, and I hope by reading this some of you will too. I have attached some articles below that share with you where you can buy sustainable/conscious clothing without sacrificing style – please read them!

Let’s Fall

Fashionista

As the weather cools down the fashion heats up, literally. Bundling up for the cooler weather if done correctly can be super chic. When the weather is just right I love to drag my sister out of bed to get her all dressed up for a spontaneous photo-shoot. I dressed her in a Forever 21 turtleneck sweater, Zara leather shorts, Hue tights and Steve Madden leather booties. She looked perfect and we had a great time taking these pictures. I hope you enjoy them!

Life's Pleasures

If you know me, then you know that I am not a fan of the insane Texas heat or any sort of hot weather; so obviously I was excited to be able to escape for a while and cool-off in the beautiful state of colorado for a week. Exploring cities like: Denver, Boulder, Vail, Breckenridge, and Estes Park.

A week in Colorado would look like:

Colorado was full of little moments. Like: finding vintage shades and jewelry in local boutiques, seeing Ingrid Michaelson and Ben Folds perform at Red Rocks, splashing your toes around in the ice-cold mountain stream, blaring pocketful of sunshine with the windows down as the cool air blows through our hair, shouting from the top of a ski lift, yoga on the top of a huge rock, to finally eating turkey sandwiches next to a waterfall after it took two hours to hike there.

It’s the little moments that make the big memories.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Uncategorized

This weekend Chloe and I took a road trip to Manhattan, Kansas to visit our sweet friend Kerrigan. We decided to make several stops along the way to add more adventure to the long eight hour drive. Only 45 minutes or so into the drive we stumbled upon Winstar World Casino to “travel the world in just under five minutes.” It was a nice way to stretch our legs a bit. For lunch we stopped in Oklahoma City to eat at a quaint barbecue restaurant. We had a craving for some good old-fashioned smoked brisket sandwiches. I knew barbecue was the souths forte, but this was some of the best barbecue we have ever had. After lunch it was non-stop driving till we got there. Upon our arrival Kerrigan showed us some of her favorite local eateries from a cute little taco shop to a donut truck, but after a long day of travel we decided to turn in a little early so we would be well rested before we headed to Kansas City in the morning. I was not expecting to love Kansas City as much as I did. The architecture and the grittiness of the city was amazing. It was historic and modern all at once. We went shopping in The Plaza, sipped coffee at Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Co. and finally lunched at Grand Street Cafe. Before heading back to Kansas State we made our last stop at Liberty Memorial to get a good view of Kansas City as a whole. This last stop turned out to be our favorite stop of the day.

Kansas thank you for having us! We’ll be back soon!

I had a blast taking photographs of these two yesterday. The amount of energy made it really easy to get a great, natural picture. My little sister and her best friend were such naturals in front of the camera, they informed me that it was because they watch America’s Next Top Model…. I wish I could post all 115 of the photos, but that is a lot of pics. I styled my little sister for the mini-photoshoot. She is wearing and Anthropologie striped blouse, Nordstrom hat, Forever 21 necklace, white skinny jeans from Target, and black leather booties.  I hope to get more blogposts similar to this up very soon! Stay tuned.
